In April 1905, the General Faculty of Oberlin College voted to establish a chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. The Zeta Chapter of Ohio, the sixth chapter in the state, was formally inaugurated on November 8, 1907. There were thirteen founding members, including President of the college Henry Churchill King (1858-1934) and twelve faculty members who were already members of chapters at their undergraduate institutions.
